50th Anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge is Commemorated in Bastogne

SARAH JAMES, anchor: Hundreds of Americans gathered today in Belgium, on this, the 50th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge. More from Richard Roth.

RICHARD ROTH reporting: It was cold today and gray, almost as cold and gray as the wartime winter 50 years ago they came here to remember.

VETERAN #1: About the kind of weather we walked into when we came here 50 years ago.

VETERAN #2: I wanted to what it would be like to have warm clothes here for a change. I didn’t have them 50 years ago.

ROTH: From Brooklyn and Hot Springs and Orlando and all across America, veterans of World War II came to this small town in Belgium to be honored today, to give thanks and to receive it for their role in the Battle of the Bulge. It was Germany’s desperate gamble to turn the tide of World War II, a surprise assault that began half a century ago today along 80 miles of Allied lines, creating the bulge that gave the battle its name. The battle lasted 44 days and American causalities were enormous. Some 80 thousand, including almost 20 thousand killed. But there was no ceremony or celebration to mark the Allied victory. The army just moved on to Germany. The ceremony today remembered it all, a solemn service honoring those who left after the war as well as those who were left behind. All of them, said Bastogne’s mayor today, will always have a home here. Richard Roth, NBC News, Bastogne.
